My Still Life paintings usually have a narrative. I am inspired to paint objects that have a particular significance for me, placed in a harmonious colour theme. I am happy to do these to order with some of a client’s favourite objects, working on the composition with them before completing the painting. Many works from this series draw on the tradition of 17th-century Dutch still life, which used objects to convey meaning in a harmoniously composed scene and presented objects of contrasting texture and form. Where possible, I use the geometric concept of Dynamic Symmetry to add structure and interest to my designs. For those who are not familiar with this concept, it consists of creating a mathematically calculated framework in order to contain the composition. Our brains instinctively search out these patterns which makes the composition appealing and satisfying visually, even if we are not aware of the underlying design.

I also produce what I call ‘Stortraits’, a cross between a Still Life and a self-portrait depicting the important aspects of a person’s life and personality through the choice of objects. I am happy to undertake commissions to reflect an important event, occasion or celebration
